Eosinophilic esophagitis is a clinical and biopsy- driven diagnosis that involves eosinophilic (a type of White Blood Cells) infiltration and inflammation of the esophagus.
Symptoms of EOE can vary from being clinically silent to having food impaction, GE reflux, chest or abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing or sleeping, nausea, vomiting malnutrition or failure to thrive in children.
Eosinophilic esophagitis is diagnosed by upper GI endoscopy with biopsies.
Most children and adults with Eosinophilic esophagitis respond positively to dietary therapy methods such as elimination diets, elemental diets and food trials. Anti-inflammatory medications (budesonide, fluticasone) are used for several months to reduce the number of the eosinophils in the esophagus.
